LabAvailable Courses

We offer an undergraduate degree, the BMLSc, and two postgraduate qualifications.

The BMLSc Degree

Undergraduate

This course is four years of full-time study.

Year 1 is the first year Health Sciences course, also taken by those wishing to enter Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, or Physiotherapy. It must be taken at the University of Otago.

After admission to the Second Year, Years 2 and 3 are spent full time in the School of Medical Sciences and the Dunedin School of Medicine at the University of Otago.

Year 4 consists of two semesters in selected medical laboratories in New Zealand. Here students gain service experience, while taking part in a distance-taught academic course from Dunedin.

Following graduation, most degree-holders choose to work for at least six months in a diagnostic medical laboratory. This is necessary to fulfil the requirements for registration as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, by the Medical Science Council of New Zealand (Wellington), who manages the system Technologists Board .
